What is Septocaine?
Septocaine is a dental local anesthetic for infiltration and nerve block anesthesia. Spetocaine contains Articaine HCL 4% with epinephrine bitartrate, sodium chloride and sodium metabisulfite. Articane HCL is a local anesthetic that is a member of the amino amide class of local anesthetics. Articane is the ingredient causing loss of sensation, epinephrine is used to limit the effect of the numbing to the intended area. Septocaine is manufactured and distributed by Septodont, the largest manufacturer and distributor of dental local anesthetics, who distributes local anasthetics to more than 150 countries. Septodont has manufacturing facilities in the United States, Canada, France and India. Septodont calls themselves "The world leader in pain control."
Septocaine Side Effects
Side effects of Septocaine, or adverse reactions to Septocaine, include abdominal pain, accidental injury, asthenia, back pain, injection site pain, malaise, neck pain, hemorrhage, migraine, syncope, tachycardia, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, glossitis, gum hemorrhage, mouth ulceration, nausea, stomatitis, tongue edemas, tooth disorder, vomiting, ecchymosis, lymphadenopathy, edema, thirst, arthralgia, myalgia, dizziness, dry mouth, facial paralysis, hyperesthesia, increased salivation, nervousness, neuropathy, paresthesia, somnolence, pharyngitis, rhinitis, pruritis, skin disorder, ear pain, taste perversion and dysmenorrhea. Other reported side effects of Septocaine include seizures or nerve injury after intravenous administration or injection.
Serious Complications with Septocaine include Paresthesia
Serious complications have been associated with Septocaine. Paresthesia is among the worst of the reported side effects of Septocaine, and has been shown to be the most frequently reported adverse event associated with Articane. Paresthesia is an ongoing anesthetic effect that lasts well beyond the expected duration of the anesthetic. Paresthesia often includes partial sensations such as tingling, itching and burning in the affected area and can cause drooling, speech impediment, loss of taste and tongue biting. It has been reported that Septocaine (4% Articane) also has a significantly higher rate of paresthesia when compared with lidocaine.
Definition of Paresthesia
Paresthesia can possibly be best explained as continued, prolonged numbness. By definition, paresthesia is an abnormal sensation of the skin, including numbness, tingling, pricking, or burning, that has no apparent cause. Paresthesia can sometimes be compared to the "pins and needles" feeling one experiences when a leg or arm "goes to sleep". Paresthesia caused by a local anesthetic can sometimes be chronic and painful.
Local Anesthetics
Local anesthetics block generation and conduction of nerve impulses. They allow medical and dental procedures to be performed without serious discomfort, and without the need for a general anesthetic. Septocaine is one such local anesthetic.
